February Meeting

January 20th, 2010 Chris Griffith

We have a packed meeting planned for February 3rd at 6pm at the Art Institute of San Diego. First off we will have a representative from Chumby. For those of you who do not know what Chumby:

chumby takes your favorite parts of the internet and delivers them to you in a friendly, always-on, always-fresh format. It’s a window into your internet life that lives outside your desktop, so content like weather, news, celebrity gossip, podcasts, music, and more has a place to play away from your world of documents and spreadsheets. Just plug in your chumby, connect to your network, and use your computer to create a lineup of favorites from over 1,500 widgets in more than 30 categories, with new ones arriving all the time. Then let your chumby do its thing — streaming everything you like, from sports scores to stock quotes, from video clips to interactive games, from photos to trivia.

They currently have two devices, the classic and the Chumby One. However, at the recent CES show in Las Vegas, several new concepts were shown; a Samsung / Chumby prototype digiframe and the Chumby Sunfury Touchscreen tablet. Hopefully we can learn more about these products as well.

We will hopefully have a recap from FlashCamp Brazil that was recently held. The event was organized by our own Demian Borba (who has been honored as an Adobe Community Professional (formerly Adobe Community Experts).

Here is a tweet from @ddura about the event:

Big shout out to @demianborba for putting on one of the best Flash events I have ever been to. Can’t wait for next year! #flashcampbrasil

Maybe we might think about a FlashCamp here in San Diego???

We will wrap up the meeting with an open forum. So if you have questions, not sure how to do something, want to demo a project, bring it on!

And one more thing. We are going to try having pizza at the meeting. I will stop by Costco before the meeting and pick up a few pizzas. We will charge $1 per slice (unless someone wants to sponsor it). Please RSVP with on Adobe Groups site so I will have an idea of how many to purchase.

July meeting: Mate Framework from the source

June 22nd, 2009 Chris Griffith

July 1, 2009
6:00 pmto8:00 pm

Come join us on July 1st at 6pm at the Art Institute of San Diego (North Building) for a presentation on the Mate Framework by Laura Arguello.

Mate is a Flex framework that leverages the tag-based MXML language to provide an easy to read map that defines how your application handles its events and distributes data. It solves the common problems developers encounter when creating Flex applications, from small to enterprise, such as retrieving data from external services and handling business logic.

During the session, we will go through the solutions to some of those recurring problems, while introducing Mate’s features and syntax.

Laura Arguello is co-founder of AsFusion, a company specialized in the development of Rich Internet Applications. Laura is best known for her contributions to the Adobe developer community made through her blog at asfusion.com and by developing open source software. She has also written articles about Flex and ColdFusion for the Adobe Developer Center, the WebDJ and the CFDJ. She holds a degree in Information and Computer Science with specialization in Software Systems from the University of California, Irvine and her main interests are usability, software architecture and finding or creating tools that make the developer’s life easier.

Hope to see you there!

Meeting this Weds (Feb. 4th) @6pm

February 2nd, 2009 Chris Griffith

Come join us in a presentation on the PureMVC framework. This is one of the more popular development frameworks for Flex (and other languages as well). Kyle will be speaking afterwards on its use in one of his recent projects. We will hopefully have some reports back from the recent Flex Camp OC.

The meeting will be held at our usual location: Art Institute, south building (http://www.sdfug.org/meeting-information/)

Hope to see you there!

PS: There might be a small give-away ;)

Meeting: December 3rd 6pm @ Art Institute

December 1st, 2008 Chris Griffith

Join us at our new home at the Art Institute (South Building) for our December meeting, Wednesday at 6pm. Directions can be found at http://www.artinstitutes.edu/sandiego/AboutUs/Directions.aspx. Our meeting is in the South building, so follow these directions except instead of turning right into the AI parking lot, turn left. the driveway bends to the left and goes down a hill and points you right to the front door of the south building.

Park anywhere in the lot to the left of the South building. Once in the building, go up the stairs and we’re in the large conference room to the right at the top of the stairs.

This month we will cover the following topics:

  • Recap the Adobe MAX conference
  • Demo Flash Catalyst (aka Thermo)
  • Raffle a copy of Adobe Web Premium  (still double checking on this), but we have some swag anyway!
  • Attending LAFlashapaloozastock?

November Meeting @ Dave & Busters!

October 22nd, 2008 Chris Griffith

November 3, 2008
8:00 pm

While we resolve where we might hold our future meetings, we thought it would be fun to just kick back and enjoy some food, cold beverages, and maybe some friendly video game action at Dave & Busters in Mission Valley (2931 Camino del Rio North San Diego , CA 92108   619-280-7115 )  .
We’re trying EventBrite to manage the attendees, let me know if us if you like this system. If you interested in having dinner beforehand, select Ticket ‘Dinner Beforehand’, so we can make a reservation. Otherwise, pick the other ticket option, so we can keep an eye out for you.

Hope to see you there!

As if that wasn’t exciting enough, I am also very happy to announce that Veoh has moved to our new offices, and we will have a much larger, more comfortable space for our next meeting! The plan is to give Chuck as much time as he needs to present, and allow time for general discussion/QA, then just open it up and let the meeting head where it may! March 5, 2008
7:00 pmto9:00 pm

As you may have heard, Adobe has announced the release of Adobe Flex 3 and Adobe AIR 1.0. Now that the cat is out of the bag, this will be the focus of our March 5th special meeting! Adobe is sponsoring this meeting with food, giveaways and a raffle copy of Adobe Flex Professional.

Flex 3 is a feature-packed release, adding new UI components like the advanced datagrid and improved CSS capabilities; powerful tooling additions like refactoring; and extensive testing tools including memory and performance profiling, plus the addition of the automated testing framework to Flex Builder.

Adobe AIR is game-changing in so many ways, delivering rich applications on the desktop, enabling access to the local file system, system tray, notifications and much more. Now you can write RIAs on the desktop using the same skills that you’ve been already using to create great web apps including both Flex and AJAX.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to see and hear about this highly anticipated release of Flex 3 and AIR at this meeting.
